MP nomination contest heating up Local MP Leon Benoit is sparing no effort to save his seat, but challenger Len Landry promises to give him a run for his money. Leo Paré Wednesday August 23, 2006 Lloydminster Meridian Booster — Local MP Leon Benoit is sparing no effort to save his seat, but challenger Len Landry promises to give him a run for his money. Benoit, who has represented the Vegreville-Wainwright riding in Ottawa for the past 13 years, was caught by surprise last week when a former member of his campaign team announced his intention to challenge him for the Conservative nomination. Landry served as Benoit’s office manager and official agent in the last federal election, but says many members of the constituency association wanted a new face for the riding. In a nomination race, each candidate must sell as many party memberships as possible, and encourage those members to come out and support them in a nomination vote. The deadline for the Vegreville-Wainwright candidates to sell memberships was midnight this past Saturday, and Benoit said he was able to garner a great deal of support in a short period of time. “The response has been phenomenal,” Benoit said. “Most people couldn’t understand why I was being challenged. Why would they want to replace me now when I’m all trained and ready to work in government? My experience is much-needed when we form a majority government, which we’re planning on doing in the next election.” Juggling his MP duties and nomination efforts, Benoit plans to put together a brochure which will be distributed to current members. He says he and his support team have been hitting the phones, asking for members’ support at the nomination vote meetings which will be held Sept. 7 in Vegreville and Sept. 8 in Lloydminster. Landry has been on the road attending various meetings throughout the constituency, which spans from Sherwood Park to Lloydminster, making it one of the largest in the country. The challenger says he likes his odds heading into the final weeks of the nomination campaign. “We’re fairly pleased with the support and the number of memberships that have followed,” Landry said. Landry says he was encouraged to seek the nomination by several members of Benoit’s own constituency association, and he has won the support of many influential members, including Danny Hosack, Benoit’s former campaign manager. “Many of our board members have said it was time for a new energy and a new look at things,” said Landry. “They wanted to make sure they were consulted on issues. The people who approached me just thought Leon had a good long run, but it’s time for someone else now.” Landry is no stranger to the political scene, serving as a member of the board of the Vegreville-Wainwright Electoral District Association, where he presently serves as the financial agent. He is active in the Alberta PC Party as a member of the board of the Strathcona PC Association, of which he was recently elected president.

Leon has done alot for the constituents of the Vegreville-Wainwright riding and the pro-life/anti-ssm movement.He represents his constituents well and always keeps in touch with them.Landry's explaination for his run against Leon that it is for the sake of change doesn't cut it.Leon has been a great MP and works hard..Why do we need change when an MP is doing an excellent job anyway?Leon is one of the few MP's to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves.He has taken courageous steps to fight for the unborn.You can read more about his courageous fights on this blog link I listed below.
